ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska Resource Education is proud to announce its induction into the National Mining Hall of Fame, an honor recognizing the organization’s significant contributions to teaching Alaskans about the state’s natural resources.
The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, located in Leadville, Colorado, celebrates the achievements of individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the mining and natural resource industries. The NMHFM awards the Prazen Living Legend of Mining Award to organizations committed to informing the public about the importance of mining through educational materials, programming, and outreach.
Alaska Resource Education has been selected for this honor in recognition of its efforts to provide educational opportunities about Alaska’s natural resources to students and teachers statewide. ARE’s curriculum features hands-on lessons on topics such as rocks and minerals, mining, energy, electricity, oil and gas, renewable energy, economics, careers, and forestry. These lessons are designed to meet Alaska State Science Standards and align with common core English, language arts, and math standards.
Ella Ede, executive director of Alaska Resource Education, expressed her gratitude for the recognition. “We are incredibly honored to receive the Prazen Living Legend of Mining Award,” said Ede. “This award shows the hard work and dedication of our team and partners who strive to inspire and inform the next generation about the importance of Alaska’s natural resources. We are committed to continuing our mission and expanding our reach to more students and communities across the state.”
ARE will accept the award in November at the NMHFM’s 2024 Induction Gala.
Since 2018, ARE has taught over 42,000 students, instructed more than 676 teachers, and visited over 50 communities across Alaska, many of which are remote. The organization also supports Alaska’s youth through scholarships, STEM camps, Girl Scouts programs, and the P.O.W.R. (Powerful Opportunities for Women in Resources) career exploration program for high school girls.
“Alaska Resource Education was selected for this award for their outstanding work in educating students about the mining and resource development industries," said Dr. Steven Hoerger, Prazen Committee Chair at the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum." ARE’s efforts in reaching remote communities and helping students understand Alaska’s natural resources truly reflect all of the Prazen Award values."
Founded in 1982, ARE operates as a nonprofit organization, funded through state, corporate, and individual donations. By collaborating with industry professionals and educators, ARE aims to spark students’ interest in Alaska’s natural resources and highlight the critical role these resources play in everyday life.
