More than 100 students from nine rural schools participated in a hands-on career fair in Ninilchik, Alaska, organized by the Kenai Peninsula Economic Development District (KPEDD). The "Student to Career Launchpad" event aimed to connect students with post-graduate opportunities through interactive workshops in health care, maritime, renewable energy, and natural resources.
Students engaged in activities like dissecting sheep eyes, tying nautical knots, and using thermal imaging cameras, providing immersive learning experiences. KPEDD Executive Director Cassidi Cameron emphasized the event's goal of bringing career resources to small schools that lack access to larger fairs.
The maritime workshop was the most popular, while the health care workshop introduced students to anatomy through dissection. Participants, like tenth-grader Judeaya Mobley, found the experience valuable for exploring career interests.
KPEDD, along with partners such as Kenai Peninsula College and the Alaska Vocational Technical Center, plans to expand the initiative to Seldovia in the future. More information is available on KPEDD’s website.
